This iconic TV show has changed the face of.. well, TV shows as we know them. Without further ado, here are [arguably] 10 iconic moments from Game Of Thrones so far:
1. The Beheading of Ned Stark
Perhaps one of the most shocking events in the history of television, this was a death that nobody saw coming (unless they’d read the book, that is.) Ned Stark was immediately everybody’s favourite character. He stood for what was right in the world, he fought against injustice and he was fair and loyal to his people and his duties. He will be missed dearly.
2. Syrio Forel training Arya Stark
“There is only one god, and his name is Death. And there is only one thing we say to Death: Not today.”
To date, this is my favourite quote in the series. Watching the greatest swordsman in Braavos teach Water Dancing to Arya was absolutely brilliant, it truly showed a different style of swordplay, one that most of us hadn’t seen before.
3. Daenerys coming out of the fire unscathed, with her dragons
This is when we first see the true power of Daenerys, of the Targaryen blood line, proving that truly “fire cannot kill a dragon.”
It is also the first glimpse at the savage dragons that will soon be the centre of Daenerys’s world. This is one of the most important scenes in the entire series, because it finally shows us that Daenerys is a true player in the game, and not just a foolish girl with big ambitions.
4. Jaqen H’ghar changing his face
It’s undoubted that Jaqen H’ghar is one of the most badass characters in the show.
He was first introduced as a prisoner whose life was saved by Arya Stark, and in ordered to repay that debt, he offered her 3 lives (for the 3 lives she saved) and carried out the assassinations almost as soon as he got the names. When we last saw him, he morphed his face and left us all guessing his true identity. Was he perhaps Syrio? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
5. Dragons show off their fire-breathing
Way back in season 2, we got our first glimpse of how much the dragons have grown, not in size but in strength. They made quick work of the crazy man in the House of the Undying (proving the name wrong) and broke the chains of the Breaker of Chains. While the dragons are being imprisoned for their crimes against Daenerys’s people, we can be sure that we will see more of their impressive skill in combat quite soon.
6. The Red Wedding
This is the most heart wrenching scene in Game of Thrones to date. We see the death of Ned Stark’s future grandson, and the death of the most honourable character we’ve come to see. Watching Robb Stark grow from a boy to a man had been one of the greatest pleasures of watching this show. Seeing him choose love over duty swayed our hearts and seeing him get torn down by the despicable Roose Bolton (he’s gotta get his head in the game) was truly earth shattering.
7. Theon Greyjoy’s torture
This is more a series of moments rather than a specific scene. I’ve always held a soft spot for Theon Greyjoy in my heart, and seeing him transform from the once proud steward of Ned Stark to Reek, a plaything for Ramsay Snow wait, Ramsay Bolton was heart breaking. From flaying to castration, there wasn’t a thing left for Reek to go through and we know not whether he can ever recover.
8. The Battle of Blackwater Bay and the Night’s Watch
Both of these battles show us one important thing: that television shows can be just as big as movies. Both battles had us hanging onto the edge of our seat in anticipation. The battle of Blackwater Bay gave us goosebumps because of how Tyrion rallied his men, and the Nights Watch battle gave us shivers because of, well, Jon Snow.
9. Cersei’s warning to Stark
“When you play the Game of Thrones, you win or you die.”
It’s a pretty good summation of the whole series, and it’s brilliance speaks for itself. I’ll just leave it at that.
10. The Red Viper of Dorne vs Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane
Arguably the greatest one-on-one battle we’ve ever seen, this battle was a great triumph in choreographed fight sequences and vomit inducing gore. Once again we see the true heartlessness of the showrunners as they take away yet another beloved character. Rest in peace Oberyn Martell.
We know you’re thinking we’ve missed a few. Why don’t you fill in those blanks?
