Ferrari took their tally of wins for the season to three as German Sebastian Vettel won the Singapore Grand Prix describing it as “one of the most intense races” he has driven in. “Iceman” Kimi Raikkonen finished third for Ferrari with Red Bull’s Daniel Riccardo coming in second.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was forced to pull out midway through the race. Hamilton was running fourth approaching the halfway point of the 61-lap race when he lost engine power, rapidly dropping back through the field before he was told to return to the garage and call it a night.

“It must be one of my best races. It was pretty intense,” Vettel said. “Lots of pressure from behind; Daniel had a very good race looking after his tyres. “Second stint I was dictating the pace. From then, I was trying to control the gap. We had a really great weekend.”

Nico Rosberg finished fourth for Mercedes to cut Hamilton’s championship lead to 41 points with six races remaining. With regard to the others, Vettel is behind Hamilton by 49 and Raikkonen is 145 adrift with a maximum of 150 available. No other driver has a chance of winning the championship. Guess, that reduces the odds for the punters. Akin to incidents in the past when dogs and other creatures have made their way on to the track, on lap 37, the Safety Car was deployed again, though this time it was because of a spectator invading the track. This spectator was later arrested following a probe into the incident after the race. Hamilton, who needs one more win to draw level with his childhood hero Senna, endured his worst weekend of the season. The Brit struggled with his tyres in qualifying, starting fifth on the grid, and his race came to an end just when it looked like he might be able to challenge for a spot on the podium.

“I was feeling super optimistic and easily keeping up,” he told the BBC. “I was hoping for a quick fix but it never came.”
