Read Through To Get Exclusive Passes To The ‘BRAVE NEW WORLD’ Splash Fashion Show
High heels, low-cut blouses, camera flashes & delectable outfits; for the little fashionistas inside of us, Fashion Weeks in New York, London, Paris, and Milan feel like Christmas time. For over two weeks, designers who have the power to change our wardrobes [without us even noticing] present collections for the A/W season, each with their own carefully-crafted eccentricity. And it’s difficult to choose between these enviable designs, but we’ve done our best to narrow it down for you [Don’t you love us?].
Pantone Colours
For A/W 2015, we saw a mix of bright and pastel colours with a few neutral shades added in for good measure [Known as Pantone colors – for those of you who don’t know, Pantones make up the colour palette for the season].
Designs and collections are considered bang on trend if these hues feature in them [Basically, what’s ‘in’ this season]. What does this mean for you? You don’t have to pick up designer clothes – you probably have a tangerine dress in your wardrobe. Now you know it’s back in business, so throw it on and keep with the times.
Pastels are still big, with spring/summery colours such as custard, tangerine, strawberry and scuba blue making their way into the collections.
For all you working runway-lovers, your best bets are hues of blue, glacier grey and even Almond. Marsala, to me, makes an interesting addition in make-up and small accessories to add a pop of colour. Take a peek at Designer Zoe Sherwood’s creations, which blend art and design together in hats and accessories for unique and exciting stand-out pieces, and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
NY Fashion Week
Fashion Week kicked off in the Big Apple from February 12 to 19. The show was a jaw-dropper for thousands of fashion-lovers that flocked the scene, braving the freezing weather to catch a glimpse of their favourite designers’ newest explorations on the runway.
Marc Jacobs:
Rounding off NYFW 2015, Marc Jacobs’ collection was a real show-stopper with shiny pleated skirts matched with black-collared long brown coats tinged accents of the season’s pantone colours such as marsala, almond and custard. Collared dresses with either bold prints or splashes of colour made the line edgy, modern and highly wearable.
Calvin Klein:
Keeping it minimalistic, Calvin Klein stayed true to its professional, clean and sharp aesthetic with a touch of modernity using dark and muted colours such as black and cream throughout their collection. The flattering structure of the dresses make them perfect for an evening out and for work in the day simultaneously.
Marchesa:
One of my all-time favourites; Marchesa did what they do best. The dresses flow beautifully due to the lightweight material but have delicate and intricate detailing, a signature for Marchesa. The designers have managed to create outfits that are sexy but without being too risqué. Using Pantone colours of Glacier Gray and Aquamarine, as well as black and other pastels, the collection has an air of elegance.
Erin Featherston:
For those looking to go ‘classically girly’ this season, Erin Featherston’s Fall collection is the perfect inspiration. With floral prints, sleek and slender aesthetic, and even some chiffon sleeves, this collection is innocent and classy. Incorporating the pantone colours of strawberry ice, lucite green, aquamarine and even some very light pink prints on dark fabrics highlight the elegance of the line. Perfect to wear for a day out in the park.
J. Crew (Womenswear):
J. Crew really impressed with their 1970’s-inspired collection, including wide-leg pants and fringed skirts [Yes, they’re back]. These are topped with layers of oversized cable knit sweaters, big jackets and scarves in glacier grey with some two-toned pieces such as strawberry ice and tangerine, almond and gold, and even some elements of gold on their grey pieces. Crisp and retro.
Altuzarra:
Altuzarra went Victorian with pieces consisting of high-neck and full-sleeved sheer lace tops paired with basic black bottoms or statement jackets to accentuate the neck and arms. Simple, yet elegantly winding the clock back.
Victoria Beckham:
The former-Spice Girl owned the fashion scene with her statement structured dresses and tops that snugly suit and flatter every body type – with thicker outerwear for the harsh New York weather.
Nicole Miller:
Miller’s dark forest themed line took inspiration from nature with fringed, sharp-cut skirts and bold multicoloured floral prints with ripped tights and bright silver shoes. Spunky with multiple prints – we’re seeing this a lot.
Zimmerman:
The Australian label strategically and beautifully incorporated all the colours of this season into the collection – a visual treat from the first piece to the very last. Though this is a risky move, the label made sure the mix of colours seemed demure. To their credit, the clothes are fun, colourful and perfect for any occasion.
On an interesting aside
The NYFW also allowed design students from Stevenson University, Baltimore, to showcase their work on the runway through an exhibition called “We Are One In Fashion”. The exhibition, which took place on February 19, consisted of a collection which was inspired by global fashion trends from Spain, Brazil, Egypt, Greece & many other countries. There were 16 stunning evening gowns, one menswear outfit and even a silver brocade suit, representing the fashion world of India. The students were given the opportunity to experience Fashion Week like professionals and worked closely with models, make-up artists and stylists.
London Fashion Week
Fashion Week went to London, the English capital of fashion, between February 20-24. When one thinks of London, it is quite easy to jump to the conclusion that because of the cold weather and constant rain spells, people are always dressed in long dark coats and Wellington boots. What we don’t see is that underneath those layers of jackets, hats and scarves, fashion thrives quite fiercely, as seen clearly below:
Anya Hindmarch:
This collection literally blew me away with its fun and quirky prints inspired by signboards that warn you “men at work”, “recycle”, “go green” and even purses with signs like “no phones allowed”, “park and ride”. For those who have a sweet-tooth, there’s even a KitKat inspired bag. This entire collection is so diverse, and yet carries an underlying theme of “help your community” in bright yet subtle prints. Creative, unique & meaningful, don’t you think?
Osman:
Cream-coloured, pearl-accented, classic dresses made up this beautiful and timeless collection. From evening wear to wedding outfits, this Osman’s Fall collection is effortlessly graceful.
Erdem:
Erdem’s Fall collection did not necessarily use the pantone palette, but has, however, spurned my interest with deep purples and violets. Focusing on those colours, this line is vibrant & electric with frilled dresses, pleated dresses, colourful prints and jackets with fringed sleeves. With a hazy and dazzling purple and stunning shades of violet being the most dominant colours, each piece is sure to make you stop and stare.
Vivienne Westwood:
No London fashion show is complete without the creative genius of Vivienne Westwood and, once again, she did not disappoint with her quirky cuts and hem lines. Using striking yet classic colours and prints, Westwood has stayed true to her frivolous and avant-garde aesthetic.
TopShop Unique:
We’re all familiar with this English clothing store and there is nothing more delightful than to think what once roamed the runway can also be found in our closets. TopShop’s collection was quite casual in muted and block colours and patterns, not to mention, ready to be worn off the runway.
Molly Goddard:
Think rebellious ballerina. This collection consists of tulle and frill dresses that give it an edgy feminine look juxtaposed with black shoes and black socks. Molly Goddard’s collection perfectly captures what a small ballerina would look like in the middle of a punk-rock transformation.
Fashion Week has now moved onto perhaps the biggest and oldest fashion capital in the world, Paris. PFW is known for its fashion titans, that dominate the world, showcasing their masterpieces and this year will undoubtedly be no exception.
