This, That & Other Nonsense Vol. VIII – IPL Observations | PG Bhaskar

The IPL is over. And I have several profound, earthshaking observations to share.

  1. They say nothing is impossible, so there must be some way of making Gautam Gambhir smile. But it is best attempted on a day when his team wins (and with a fifty coming off his bat). Even then, you might have to insert your index fingers into his mouth and pull them apart with a powerful upward movement.
  2. From being a cricket prude, I’ve come full circle. I’m now okay with brightly (or lightly) clad cheer girls. But I draw the line at Yousuf Pathan wearing violet coloured trousers and pink shoes. There are limits to a cricket fan’s tolerance.
  3. It’s a delight watching Chris Gayle bat. One step forward, a powerful swing of hands and the ball soars into the sky in an awe-inspiring arc. But I shudder at the thought of seeing yet another newspaper headline screaming ‘Gayle storm strikes (losing team).’
  4. Dave Warner is another dashing, destructive opener. But he must make up his mind whether that thing above his upper lip is a stain of some sort, or a moustache. If it’s the former, he must wipe it off, pronto. If not, he must grow it or colour it. It can’t just remain a blonde, half-hearted facial blob.
  5. Earlier, cricket commentators were serious people. Now, they have taken on the additional role of comedians. Spearheaded by Danny Morrison, they are amusing (occasionally), silly (often) and even make funny faces. Long live the IPL.
