The voraciously ambitious city of Dubai has announced yet another creative endeavour to etch it firmly on the regional and world map as an industry leader; the inaugural Dubai Design Week, to be held between October 26-31, at Dubai Design District, is expected to bring with it a significant swirl of creativity, learning, and a flattering spotlight on UAE designers in the fields of product, furniture, interior and graphic design.

If you’re an aspiring designer or a design enthusiast, take note:

For all emerging and aspiring designers in the region looking for inspiration, expect to meet your muse at every turn as the city is lit with spurring installations by renowned regional and international designers at prime locations in Dubai.

Dr Amina Al Rustamani, Chairperson of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council added “Dubai Design Week will be an important platform for our design communities, providing an intelligently curated and inspirational environment where creative minds can come together to learn, collaborate and innovate.””

The week also promises to showcase the best innovations by postgraduates from the world’s leading design universities [titled Global Innovation Design], along with an extensive programme of educational talks, lectures and workshops.

If you’re looking to join creative forces:

Another local objective of the week is to intensify cultural exchange and collaboration amidst designers in the country.

Nez Gebreel, CEO of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council commented, “This initiative marks a pivotal point in establishing a world-class design community in Dubai and being the catalyst that elevates the emirate’s design industry to the international stage.”

Dubai Design Week Is A Go
A panel featuring Nez Gebreel, CEO of Dubai Design and Fashion Council, Cyril Zammit, Fair Director, Design Days Dubai, Lindsay Miller, Managing Director of Dubai Design District (d3), Dr Noah Raford, Advisor at the Prime Minister’s Office and Hamad Khoory, Partner, Loci Architecture and Design, and moderated by Suzanne Trocmé, Editor at Large, Wallpaper* magazine, highlighted key aspects of the programme and discussed how both professionals and the wider public can take part in the event.

If you’re looking to break into the regional and international market:

While the event exceptionally mobilizes discovery and creativity locally, its commercial focus is one of placing Dubai at the forefront of Design on a regional and international playing field, reflective of billions of dollars worth of revenue.

Cyril Gammit, Fair Director at Design Days Dubai emphasized that Design Week is the next logical step, “’Dubai has already started building its reputation as a global hub for design through the success of events such as Design Days Dubai, Downtown Design. Now is the time to build on that success and introduce Dubai Design Week; an opportunity for the creative industries to engage with regional and international audiences.’’

In the same vein, Abwab, proves to be an important element of the programme for emerging and established talent as it will offer them the opportunity to showcase their work in individual pavilions designed by Loci, UAE-based architecture firm. The pavilion theme for 2015 being ‘Games: The Element of Play in Culture,’ designers from Jordan, Kuwait, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and UAE will be featured along the walkways and open spaces at D3.

In conjunction with regional interest, Dubai Design Week, coinciding with Downtown Design, a leading design trade fair, reflects an international alliance with six design weeks whereby emerging brands from the participating countries will be exhibited at Downtown Design [San Francisco Design Week, Abierto Mexicano de Diseño (Mexico City), Helsinki Design Week, Istanbul Design Week, Beijing Design Week and Melbourne Design Week].
