GELSENKIRCHEN – Ronaldo “found” his form (like he lost it in the first place) again to help Real Madrid ease past Schalke with a scoreline of 2-0.

Scoring for the first time in four games, Cristiano Ronaldo gave Los Blancos the lead with a header in the 26th minute from a Dani Carvajal cross.

Recently, the prolific Ballon D’Or winner has been in the news for his lack of form, apparently, it takes just one goal for critics to say that you have “found it again.”

Schalke rarely threatened Iker Casillas and can only be thankful that the scoreline was not as bad as it was at the same stage last season when they played Real to get pummelled,  1-6.

The only other highlight of the game came from mercurial Marcalo’s rasping shot into the top corner from the edge of the box. It was reminiscent of Patrice Evra’s shot against Bayern Munich last season.

Real clearly have the advantage in this tie, however, the same cannot be said of the night’s other two contenders –  FC Basel and Porto. These two teams fought out a one goal draw at Basel in Switzerland.

The home side took the lead early on in the first half through Derlis Gonzalez, who beautifully controlled a 40-yard pass from midfielder Fabian Frei, to strike past the charging Fabiano.

This goal was the home side’s only shot of the whole game. In fact, Porto thought they had equalised when Casemiro’s cleaned up a rebound. However, referee Mark Clattenburg ruled it offside for interference from two Porto players in front of the goalkeeper.

Danilo ensured the visitors did not leave empty-handed winning and converting a spot kick late in the second half.
